When foot washing isn’t easy…
Some thoughts on service by Misty
I love to serve. I’m one of those people who would much rather be in the background working than socializing with others. Give me a job, and I’m happy. There are times, though, when serving others hasn’t been so much fun.
When Eric and I were first married, we lived in a small town and went to a small congregation. Because we were young, had lots of Bible knowledge right out of Harding, and were eager to help, we ended up with many responsibilities at church. At times, it was very overwhelming. We didn’t enjoy church anymore because it was a lot of work. We really struggled with this idea until we went to Yellowstone Bible Camp and heard Everett Huffard speak. He talked about how at times, especially when he and his wife were missionaries, that church was more work than fun. He learned that going to church and fellowshipping wasn’t just about himself.
There are times in our lives where we’ll give so much that our service becomes a chore. This isn’t necessarily bad. God wants us to be challenged, and He expects a lot out of us. As long as we remember to be gracious in our service and to share our concerns with God, He will continue to bless us and our service. God never said that doing His will would be easy, although we often think it should. I pray that when I’m struggling, when I’m tired and don’t think I can continue, when foot washing becomes a chore instead of an immediate blessing that I’ll remember I’m a “fragrance of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing” (2 Corinthians 2:15, NASB). I never know how my service might be affecting others around me. I pray, though, that I am a part of the aroma that leads to life, for myself and others (2 Corinthians 2:16, NASB).
